“Held” lyrics – special song
Current mood: reflective

Back in December, I was blessed to be invited to speak at South Broward High School’s Ambassabor Club, on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They were holding a talent show called Ambassador Idol, and they donated the proceeds to MAW.

There was so much talent at this show! At my first visit to the school, which was to talk to the kids, they decided that they would dedicate the show to Leora. Needless to say, I was so touched by this. The Ambassador Club is all about community service, and these kids are amazing. They work so hard to help the community, and to do their part in the world!

This song I have posted, called “Held” was sung at the show by a very sweet girl named Kendra, who looked and sounded like an angel. She dedicated the song to my daughter, and I am not sure there was a dry eye in the house. I know mine weren’t!

Here are the lyrics to the song you are now hearing on Leora’s page (www.myspace.com/LeorasLegacy.com). It is really beautiful.

I want to thank the kids at SBHS, as well as their fearless leader, Lou Vera, who guides them to be more than they think they can. And special thanks to Kendra, for singing this inspirational song. I had never heard it before. Now I know all the words!

Held

Two months is too little
They let him go
They had no sudden healing
To think that providence would
Take a child from his mother while she prays
Is appalling

Who told us we’d be rescued?
What has changed and why should we be saved from nightmares?
We’re asking why this happens
To us who have died to live?
It’s unfair

This is what it means to be held
How it feels when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive
This is what it is to be loved
And to know that the promise was
When everything fell we’d be held

This hand is bitterness
We want to taste it, let the hatred NUMB our sorrow
The wise hands opens slowly to lilies of the valley and tomorrow

This is what it means to be held
How it feels when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive
This is what it is to be loved
And to know that the promise was
When everything fell we’d be held

If hope is born of suffering
If this is only the beginning
Can we not wait for one hour watching for our Savior?

This is what it means to be held
How it feels when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive
This is what it is to be loved
And to know that the promise was
When everything fell we’d be held

Recapping & Restarting
Into 2008 we go!
I will begin this new year by welcoming everyone to the next chapter in our lives. We have all had many things happen in the last year that we can reflect on and leave behind as we move forward.
For me, 2007 was, as each year is, a year of many changes. Some changes were easy, some hard – some life changing, some were not too big of a deal. Nonetheless – CHANGE. Some of these changes brought me to a virtual standstill, and forced me to reassess and rearrange my total life, lifestyle, and belief system.
BUT I DID IT, AND I CAME OUT THE OTHER SIDE BETTER OFF AND STRONGER, SMARTER, ETC…BLAH, BLah, blahhhh. We’ve all heard this in many different situations, about different things.
So what does it all really mean?
What it all means is that there were some very painful decisions and changes that absolutely had to be made this year.
I had to take an honest look at some things that I didn’t really want to. I had to make changes based on what was best for me, rather than what was easier. I had to trust that my God (of my understanding) knows more than me about what I need. I had to break my own heart to better my life.
I have broken my own heart before, in many different ways. I broke my own heart when I chose to let my daughter die with dignity. More than once have I broken my heart over a man, or relationship that was not healthy for me. 2007 was no different.
Last year I tore it all down, rearranged the pieces, and this year I will build it back up again. I am not physically alone, but my quest can only be realized by me.
Over the years, my New Years Resolutions have become more realistic, and attainable. This year, I simply resolve to do things that will continue to move my life in an upward motion. I am not just saying that I want serenity and happiness. I will take the steps I need to attain these things – albeit by BABY steps – LOTS of baby steps!

Happy New Year??*
That’s right- it’s the new year again, and with it comes much emotion for everyone.
For those who grieve, the New Year brings a whole new set of emotions that don’t always bring hope for the future or warm fuzzy new beginnings. For the grieving, it usually involves a whole lot of “Ohhhhh, another year of pain and missing the one I love that is not here anymore”.
What many people who grieve do not know is that this year cancould be the year that we can feel renewal and new hope for the future.
Our emotions are based on our views and perceptions. Our inner vocabulary rules the way in which we feel from day to day, and whether or not we heal from grief.
This may sound overly simplistic, but it is absolutely true. If we use words such as devastated, destroyed, or tragic, then we surely will see our situation as such. If we tend to see things in general as negative, we will have more difficulty in moving forward out of grief.
If we are able to let go for a moment and try a new approach, we may find it possible to begin healing.
It is as simple as this;
When I wake up in the morning, I do not allow myself to think, “Oh, not another day in hell I am living without my daughter”. I wake up and I think, “Thank you (higher power) for this sunrise, for my beautiful –boys, for this incredible man who loves me, for my loving home, for my ability to love, and to laugh hysterically.” I also keep in mind the fabulous gifts that have come as a result of the tragedies in my past. I am not a pro at it, and it doesn’t work every time. I still have my moments, but they are just that – moments – not days, weeks, months or years.
Being positive and changing our inner vocabulary takes practice, but it is possible.
The question to ask yourself is this- and it must be answered honestly; “Am I truly ready to begin healing, and am I ready to do whatever it takes?”
If you can answer “Yes” to this question, maybe you are ready to take the next step.

*This article was included in last January’s newsletter, but I felt it was worth repeating!

Shining Light in 2008
Interest, at best, was sporadic last year for grief retreats and support groups – when I was looking to schedule them… But with God having such a sense of humor and irony, it wasn’t until I had filled up my schedule with other things that many of you began to contact me, wondering WHEN & WHERE!
So this time, we will begin early, I would be thrilled if we were able to busy ourselves with many healing projects this year to pull us into a brighter 2009!
I will begin by listing here what I will be doing, and I would like to hear from those of you interested. The year is a clean slate, and I am ready to begin scheduling. Here is the plan-

-Monthly day retreats
-Quarterly weekend retreats & BootCamps
-Yearly- the BIGGIE retreat – 4 days/3 nights
I am shopping for a support group home, and will begin scheduling soon. I am looking to have weekly or bi-weekly groups. That will depend on your feedback, so please let me know what you are looking for!
I am also structuring a 12 week grief healing course for those looking to truly heal from grief, and make their lives better in all areas.
We have lots and lots of ways to heal and become the functioning, happy individuals we would like to be, so please contact me and let me know what’s on your mind.
I am looking forward to an exciting, blessed, healing, and happy 2008!!!

Are you ready for BOOTCAMP???
This year, if you are ready to deal with the reality that comes with not just healing from grief, but changing your entire life, consider attending a Grief BootCamp.

BootCamp is not for the newly bereaved. There must be an appropriate period of mourning after a devastating loss. Some individuals, however, find that the grief period has gone on far too long. For those who can’t seem to break out of this cycle of grief, or depression, BootCamp can help.

I am a firm believer that how we grieve, how long we grieve, and the ability to heal from grief comes directly as a result of our personality and upbringing.

Asking ourselves key questions, and honestly answering can be an indicator of how we need to change ouselves. I may ask myself, “Do I feel like this loss is THE WORST thing that could happen, or do I remind myself that it could have been worse?” This is a “Glass half empty or full” type of question that speaks volumes. Some of us are optimists, some pessimists. We can all learn new behaviors if we wish. First, we must learn more about ourselves.

Grief BootCamp is a shock to the system of sorts. Merging the physical, emotional, and spiritual, we push ourselves to our limits to purge a lifetime of toxic thoughts, foods, emotions, substances, and habits. Some people just need a jumping off point to get off the merry-go-round of mourning. Some people need an opportunity to begin a new life; a life of serenity and joy. A RE-creation of what we were truly meant to be.

All you need for BootCamp is to be HONEST, OPEN & WILLING to change, and to feel BETTER..

Twelve Steps Applied to Grief Recovery

Possibly one of the most difficult things to accomplish in order to overcome the darkest days of grief is to wade through the murky waters of our upbringing, and pivitol life experiences which have molded us into who we are and how we grieve. The following is the first of twelve steps, adapted loosely from the steps of Alcoholics Anonymous that have proven to be quite helpful to many people who were entirely ready to let go of the desolation of mourning, to come into the light again – some, for the first time ever! We will discuss these steps further as we move along into the year.

This is the first step we will be examining to begin the healing:

1.    We admitted we were powerless over grief, and that our lives had become unmanageable.Obviously, as with any type of healing or recovery, we have to first acknowledge that there is, in fact, a problem. When we are overcome with grief, life seems to be at a standstill. In actuality, life is at a standstill. We come to a point in life where everything has changed, whether we were ready to change or not. All of our hopes, dreams and plans for the future are no longer the same. We must adapt and adjust, which, in a sense, means we must recreate who we are.
Our natural instinct is to fight for normalcy, and to keep things the same. When we suffer a great loss, this obviously cannot happen. In order to recover, we must come to a point where we are ready to accept that things will never be the same, and it is we who must now adjust to the changes.

- If I am to heal, I must resist the urge to remain in a place of self-pity. I still have my moments, but they no longer stretch into days, weeks or months -

So noted…
The quotes and poetry of Maya Angelou are worth mentioning when speaking of grief and healing.

Jeri Lynn Platt is the founder of Shining Light Grief Support. She has long been an advocate for natural birthing, cesarean prevention, unnecessary medical intervention and the medical rights of the pregnant parent.
Grief support was only a part of the support and advocacy she offered until the illness and subsequent death of her fifteen year old daughter, Leora, in April of 2003 brought her to a new level of education and understanding. An ordained minister (non-denominational), she offers education, spiritual & emotional support, hope and respite for the weary and grief-stricken through the use of a series of support tools, in the hope that we can all be UNstuck in our grief.
Jeri is also committed to helping to find a cure for Leiomyosarcoma, by raising awareness and funds through the efforts of herself and those who were touched by the life and death of Leora. The Princess Leora Fund is a memorial fund created at The National Leiomyosarcoma Foundation (NLMSF.org).

Jeri is available for speaking, support groups, workshops, one-on-one support and offers a series of grief retreats at one of the most beautiful spa resorts in sunny South Florida.

Leoras Birthday
Current mood: reflective
Category: reflective Life

Twenty years ago today, my daughter began changing the world, first, simply by showing her beautiful face.

On her birthday, the same thing runs through my mind every year… As I looked at her for the first time, I had no way of knowing that I would not be seeing it for the rest of MY life. What would I have done differently had I known what was in our future? I can only imagine…

The age-old question comes to mind – If you could know when you are going to die, would you WANT to know?

I remember when Leora was recovering in the hospital after her first tumor was removed. They finally let me put her in a wheelchair and take her outside. It was the first time we talked about her having cancer. We still didn’t know what kind of cancer she had. I was rolling her down the sidewalk in front of the hospital, and she said, “Mommy, why me? Why do I have cancer?” What could I say? The only thing that was in my mind- “I don’t know, Baby. I am so sorry. I wish it was me instead of you.” She gave me an emphatic “NO”, and told me, “If it was you, I’d go crazy!”

At the same time, I felt like somebody kicked me in the stomach, and I felt like my heart would explode with the love I felt for her. What a surprising thing for her to say. I spent Leora’s life worried what would happen to her if I died before she was grown, because she didn’t have a father. In a cruel, ironic twist, the opposite was happening. Who ever would’ve guessed?

This ’selfish’ teenager, who ‘didn’t care about anybody but herself’ (according to my crazy mother, and crazier boyfriend at the time) would later tell me that she wasn’t afraid of dying. She was only worried about what would happen to me if she did. No one else who knew Leora was surprised when I shared that with them. She was loved by so many people, and known for her big heart, her silliness, and how she made it her mission to bring people up when they were down. She did that until the end, literally.

Leora’s life was not easy. My life with her wasn’t easy either. I had her at nineteen. We really grew up together, she was tough. She wanted to grow up so fast. My job as her mom was to balance reeling her in with giving her space. Geeeeez- that was exhausting! To look back, of course, we all know she had a lot to do in a short period of time.

I believe in the connectedness of all things. Maybe on some level, she and I knew that we did not have forever. We had a very different relationship than most mothers and daughters. Her friends, to this day, still tell me they wish they had with their moms what Leora and I had. Maybe if she wasn’t going to die young, we would have been different…I don’t know.

So, here it is, twenty years down the road, and I have these incredible memories of a lifetime – Leora’s lifetime – that are so special to me. I am raising her brothers. Travis and Sky, no doubt, are better for their experiences too. They are such great young men. They are compassionate, and they have a deep seated gentleness and kindness about them that makes me so incredibly proud. This is, in part, because of Leora. They understand loss like few can.

So if I had known twenty years ago that Leora would die at fifteen, what would I have done? I probably would have sheltered her too much, tried to make her spend all her time with me, and I know I would have tried to change the inevitable.

Thank God we can’t know. I would not be proud of the way I raised her had I known. Instead, I AM so proud of the way I raised her, and the very special relationship we had. Leora made me better because I knew her, and I am the luckiest person in the world, because for just a little while, she called me Mommy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my sweetheart, wherever you are…

As many of you know, Leora’s 4th anniversary is Thursday, and my plans for the Rock Paper Scissors Tournament had to be sidelined due to me being sick for the better part of the last month.
Soooo…..
I have sent this around to many salons in my area, and am in the
process of an email to send to my list to hold a Hair ‘n’ Nail-athon on Thursday.
Basically, the hair or nail salon pledges a percentage or dollar amount for each product, customer and procedure for that day.

So I will pass this onto you all if you are intested in passing it on
to whoever cuts your hair, does your nails, or any hair & nail people you know…

There are downloadable forms if you want to print a paper flyer, or
they can just go to the website to register their salon – it’s all
clickable, plus, at the end of the business day they can simply go to
the donation page to make good on their pledge.

Here is the link- www.myshininglight.com/HairnNailAthon

Of course, there is a link on the front page at www.LeorasLegacy.com

Let me know if anyone is interested, and please send this post to your email lists!!!

Oh yeah – please wear PURPLE on her anniversary for LMS, and PINK on her birthday for HER…

GOOD FOR AWARENESS IF THIS IS COUNTRY / WORLDWIDE!

Do Alternative Cancer Treatments Really Work?

by Tanya Harter Pierce, MA, MFCC

Tanya Pierce

Despite the expenditure of billions of dollars, mainstream medicine’s track record for curing cancer is unfortunately dismal. Too many people have watched loved ones die miserably after suffering the terrible side effects of chemotherapy and other toxic conventional treatments, and more and more are choosing alternative methods instead.

Sydney’s mom was one such person. Sydney was a bright little girl just two years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After a year of chemotherapy, Sydney was in remission and her parents and doctors hoped the cancer would not come back. But it did come back, and at age four Sydney’s doctors were recommending a bone marrow transplant as her only hope. However, this procedure offered a mere 5-10% chance of cure and the treatment could potentially cause severe damage to her body (or even kill her). Instead, Sydney’s mom decided to decline the conventional treatment and chose an alternative approach that was safe and non-toxic. Within just a few months, there was no sign of leukemia in little Sydney.  She is currently nine years old and still cancer-free. Sydney’s story is not uncommon as advances in alternative medicine continue to outpace conventional allopathic medicine for the treatment of chronic metabolic diseases.

So what do we mean by “alternative cancer treatments?” Any health treatment is considered alternative if it has not yet been approved by the FDA and has not yet been accepted by mainstream medicine. But many “alternatives” are scientifically based and effective treatments nevertheless.  The approach administered to Sydney is an easy-to-use liquid formula called Protocel.  This formula was developed by an American chemist who discovered a way to interfere with how cancer cells produce energy for themselves.  The approach is supported by research done by the Nobel Prize-winning scientist Otto Warburg, who proved that cancer cells primarily use anaerobic cell respiration. Protocel interferes with that type of cell respiration just enough to make anaerobic cells (cancer cells) fall apart.

The Protocel formula has been used by thousands of people to achieve recoveries from breast, prostate, lung, brain, colon, and virtually all other types of cancer. A side benefit is that many other illnesses–such as multiple sclerosis, viral infections, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s Disease also involve anaerobic cells.  Thus, Protocel has been used to help people with these conditions as well. Typical examples include a woman who used Protocel to cure herself of metastasized bladder cancer, only to find that all signs of her Hepatitis C infection had disappeared.  A man who saw his wife cure herself of metastasized vaginal wall cancer decided to use Protocel himself preventively, and within two weeks a psoriasis/fungal type infection that he’d had on his fingers for ten years completely cleared up.

Another powerful alternative cancer approach based on Dr. Warburg’s anaerobic principle of cancer cells is called Cesium High pH Therapy. This was developed by an American physicist named Dr. Aubrey Keith Brewer who discovered that cancer cells readily take in the mineral cesium, which then alkalizes the cancer cells to death from the inside.

Following are two real-life cases of people who chose to use cesium. A man suffering from advanced stomach cancer was told by his oncologist that his cancer was not responding to chemotherapy. His medical team said that the only thing they had left to offer him was total surgical removal of his stomach, after which they would attach his upper intestine to his esophagus. This man was not pleased with the option of trying to live without a stomach, so he declined the surgery. His wife found out about cesium and he used that instead for a complete recovery. He continues to remain cancer-free years later.

A woman with metastasized ovarian cancer was told by her doctor that chemotherapy would never get rid of all her cancer; it could only hope to control it.  As she saw her cancer gradually spreading, she finally stopped the ineffective chemotherapy and through the use of cesium became cancer-free as well.

Protocel and Cesium High pH Therapy are just two of many effective alternative methods.  In fact, my book Outsmart Your Cancer: Alternative Non-Toxic Treatments That Work  presents 12 alternative cancer treatment methods that are all backed by sound scientific documentation and impressive track records. While no approach is a “Magic Bullet” that will cure everybody, when used correctly alternative methods for cancer often provide better overall chances for long-term cure than chemotherapy or radiation.

As already mentioned, an important difference between alternative and conventional cancer treatments is that alternative methods are not officially approved by the FDA and are not prescribed by mainstream medicine.  This means you won’t hear about them from your oncologist and your health insurance company won’t reimburse you if you choose to use one. So it is left to you to educate yourself as to your true options. Another important difference is that alternative methods are always non-toxic, whereas conventional methods are virtually always toxic.

It’s the non-toxic aspect of alternative cancer treatments that is the key to why alternative methods are more effective at achieving long-term cures in many cases.  This is because a non-toxic method can be used 24/7, for as many weeks, months, or even years as it takes to get rid of all of one’s cancer. Being non-toxic, it does not hurt a person’s healthy cells or immune system, and thus allows for continual use in cooperation with the body’s own healing process.

Both chemo and radiation, on the other hand, are so toxic and so damaging to the body’s immune system they do NOT allow for continual use.  In fact, using chemo or radiation every day for months would kill the patient. So breaks in the treatment are necessary to allow the patient to recover from the treatment–and these breaks allow the cancer to recover and grow back, too! Often, the cancer grows back even more virulently because the immune system is so weakened.  This explains the vicious cycle in conventional medicine of remission and recurrence until the patient dies.

It is tragic to hear heart-breaking stories of people who bravely suffered the side effects of toxic chemotherapy or radiation only to find their cancer has spread even more extensively throughout their body. Once they find an effective alternative approach, they frequently say, “If I had known about alternative methods, I never would have done the chemo and radiation in the first place.” With 1 in 3 Americans likely to develop cancer at some point in their lifetime, and our medical system turning its back on alternative medicine, it is essential and heartening to know there are non-toxic options out there that really can work!

Tanya Harter Pierce is a retired marriage, family, child counselor who started researching alternative cancer treatments when a family member was diagnosed with the disease.  To learn more about her book, Outsmart Your Cancer: Alternative Non-Toxic Treatments That Work, or to listen to inspiring testimonials of cancer recoveries using alternatives, visit www.OutsmartYourCancer.com.

Crystal Awareness Bracelet has to be seen to be believed

I have to let everyone know I received two Swarovski Crystal LMS
Awareness bracelets yesterday from a lovely lady named Elycia Norton.
She has a company called Vael Designs, and she makes gorgeous
jewelry – awareness bracelets and LOTS of other stuff too.
She has generously committed to giving part of the profits for the
$25 LMS bracelets to LMS research.
She is such a lovely woman to deal with, and is really interested in
helping us in our plight.

The following is the email I sent her after receiving the bracelets
she sent me at no charge – one for me, and one to raffle off. I was
so touched I just had to share…

PLEASE visit her site, and show her some love, then pass her site
around.

Thanks as always for your support!
Love, Jeri

My email to Elycia-
“Elycia

I am choked up as I write this. I cannot tell you the special meaning
that the Leiomyosarcoma Awareness bracelet holds for me and so many
others.

When I got the mail today, I saw the return label on the envelope. I
stopped in the front yard and tore open the package!

I am not exaggerating when I say that the picture does not do justice
to the real deal. The bracelet is so dainty, and so lovely. The
drawstring pouch is a nice touch too. Even your business cards are
high quality!

I have enjoyed so much the communication we have had in the creation
of this bracelet. There are so many unique jewelry designers out
there, and I have spoken with many of them over the last few months.
You are the only one I did not feel like was just jumping on the
Cancer Awareness bandwagon. Your offer to donate part of the proceeds
to research is very generous. I feel you truly care about our cause.

I look so forward to a long business relationship, and consider you a
friend to all LMS fighters

I WILL WEAR MY BRACELET PROUDLY!

Deepest and warmest thanks, Jeri

Angry Guy sez…

************************************************************

Hi everybody

It has become eerily quiet on the LMS homefront since I put up the donation page a couple of days ago…

Many, MANY people have been telling me for so long, “Please let me know what I can do to help!”, but suddenly everyone has disappeared!

I think, if many of you are like me, maybe you cannot afford to make a large donation.

PLEASE DON’T LET THAT STOP YOU!

Understand that a simple five, ten or twenty dollar donation is HUGE when many people do it. It doesn’t have to be anything bank-breaking.

Every little bit helps.

Please see yesterday’s blog to better understand our need for private donations. No one else is going to help us find a cure.

So PLEASE, you asked what you can do to help. I am telling you what we need.

We need you to get out your check card or credit card, and go to
www.LeorasLegacy.com. Please make a donation today!

Thank you in advance for your generosity

Love always, Jeri
